Cannaregio armchair and ottoman by Gaetano Pesce for Cassina, 1987

Designed in 1987 by Gaetano Pesce for Cassina, the Cannaregio armchair forms part of an iconic collection of 1980s Italian design and marks the beginning of the Post-Modern era. First unveiled at the Milan Furniture Fair in 1987, the series takes its name from the Venetian district of Cannaregio, where Pesce spent part of his summers.

Conceived as a true architectural composition, the Cannaregio deliberately breaks with the traditional conventions of the armchair. Its asymmetrical forms, irregularly contoured backrest and freestanding armrest lend the piece a particularly expressive sculptural presence.

The concept devised by Gaetano Pesce is based on a series of independent elements, varying in shape, size and volume, which can be used on their own or freely combined to form different arrangements.

Here we present the Cannaregio armchair accompanied by its matching ottoman. The combination of the two pieces creates a particularly generous and comfortable seat, whilst retaining the collection’s characteristic sculptural appearance.

The frame is made of plywood and is upholstered with polyurethane foam. The various elements are covered in grey, orange and beige fabric.

Slightly discoloured on one armrest and the top of the backrest, the fabric is in very good original condition. Stamped on the lining of the Cassina label. The fabric sections are detachable via a Velcro strip and are therefore easy to care for.

With the Cannaregio, Gaetano Pesce has developed a concept of furniture that straddles the boundary between design, architecture and sculpture. Far from being a merely functional armchair, it becomes a genuine compositional element within the space, characteristic of Pesce’s exploration of individuality, irregularity and diversity.

A leading figure in 20th-century Italian design, Gaetano Pesce constantly challenged the conventions of industrial furniture.
