Pair of AEO armchairs by Cassina – Paolo Deganello, cognac leather
Created in 1973 by Paolo Deganello for Cassina, the AEO armchair is an iconic piece of 1970s Italian design and a symbol of the radical movement led by Archizoom (the renowned design firm founded in 1966). Conceived as an alternative to traditional furniture conventions, it offers a free, modular, and experimental approach to seating.
Their original structure, with its patina and exposed tubular steel, combined with generous, deconstructed volumes, gives them an instantly recognizable aesthetic; the whole is set on a solid plastic base. The AEO model embodies a vision of design that is both functional and expressive, now particularly sought after in the world of vintage and collectible furniture. AEO was the avant-garde of armchairs in the early 1970s; Ölddesign believes it would be just as avant-garde in 2026.
This pair of armchairs has been fully and carefully restored. The cushions have been reupholstered in cognac-colored leather selected for its quality and elegant patina, while certain parts are covered in a fabric from Casamance made of sturdy, durable cotton and linen suitable for heavy use (OEKO-TEX® certified, guaranteeing the absence of substances toxic to the body and the environment).
The combination of materials creates a subtle balance between warmth, texture, and modernity.
Comfortable and sculptural, these AEO armchairs fit equally well in a contemporary interior as in a more eclectic setting. They are a standout piece of vintage Italian design, combining historical value with everyday practicality.
