Description
This Florence Knoll model 116 sideboard, produced by Knoll International, is an iconic piece of American modernist design from the 1950s and 1960s. Rare in this configuration, the Model 116 is distinguished by its sliding doors clad in natural raffia, a fine, textured material particularly sought after by collectors. This piece is all the more rare as the back is also covered in this material. It can therefore be placed in the centre of a room and used as a room divider.
The varnish has been fully restored, whilst retaining its patina with minor signs of wear on the top; the raffia is original and the piece has been meticulously cleaned.
The piece is in a very fine vintage condition.
DESIGN & CONTEXTE
Designed by Florence Knoll for Knoll International, the Model 116 embodies an architectural approach to furniture: clean lines, rational proportions and high-end finishes.
This version perfectly illustrates the use of natural materials in certain rare Knoll productions, notably the woven raffia applied to the sliding doors and the use of a light-coloured wood: in this case, Canadian maple in its honey hue.
