Dr Sonderbar armchair by Philippe Starck for XO, 1983

‘Dr Sonderbar’ armchair designed by Philippe Starck in 1981 and produced by XO.

Only 1 left in stock.

The armchair is constructed entirely around a steel tube frame. This model is originally lacquered in gold. It is one of the less common versions; it was also available in chrome and black, which are the most common versions, although still rare.

Three legs extend from the center of the seat and are connected by curved tubes that form a particularly original base.

The perforated metal seat is simply placed on top of this structure. Here, Philippe Starck uses very few elements to create an armchair with an instantly recognizable silhouette. Viewed from the side or the front, the interplay of the tubes and the structure’s various angles give the piece an almost architectural appearance.

This armchair retains its original colour and displays a beautiful patina befitting its age, with marks and nuances resulting from its use and history. We recommend leaving it in this condition to preserve its collectable value.

History of the Dr. Sonderbar

Philippe Starck designed the Dr. Sonderbar in 1981, at the very beginning of his collaboration with XO. The model is one of the first creations that would help define his highly personal approach to furniture design.

At that time, Starck was working extensively with simple metal structures, geometric shapes, and industrial materials. The Dr. Sonderbar is a good example of this: the armchair is reduced to a few essential elements, but their assembly creates a very distinctive form.

The tripod structure is not merely an aesthetic choice. It allows the armchair to be built around a central point while emphasizing the open space beneath the seat. The bent tubes thus become an essential part of the design.

The model is now part of the collections at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and remains one of Philippe Starck’s most notable creations from the early 1980s.
