Eames Lounge Chair Upholstery Support Panel– High-Density Fiberboard
The Ölddesign gallery has restored several Eames lounge chairs (Herman Miller / Mobilier International /Vitra): wood, leather, foam, hardware and cushions.
The seat, ottoman, and backrest cushions rest on a perforated support panel, designed to allow airflow and prevent tearing over time.
The leather and zipper are directly stitched onto this structural panel.
This support panel can be difficult to source, and after decades of use, it often deteriorates particularly along the stitching areas.
When carrying out a full or partial reupholstery, this component should also be replaced.
Ölddesign therefore chose to produce this essential yet invisible component in-house, at the very core of the chair’s upholstery structure.
Each panel is manufactured in our workshop in Lyon, faithfully replicating the original design and material used by Mobilier International for Herman Miller Europe. We were committed to a short supply chain and to using materials that meet the quality of the original.
The raw material is high-density hardboard “Made in France”.
Three plate models are available:
-The headrest
-The lower backrest
-The seat
The models are supplied with eyelets.
Press studs are not supplied, but you can remove the original ones and reuse them.
Price per panel (seat, ottoman or backrest): 90 euros excluding delivery.
To restore a single Eames Lounge Chair, you will need 1 seat panel and 2 backrest panels

European versions of the Eames Lounge Chair (Mobilier International, Herman Miller Europe, Vitra) have always used this fiberboard panel.
American Herman Miller models switched to plastic panels with long clips from 1971 onwards. Prior to 1971, they also featured this original fiberboard panel with round snap fasteners.
It is possible to replace a plastic panel with this traditional fiberboard version; in that case, round snap fasteners must be installed.
